![]() ![]() It means they’ve gotten us to see something deeper in said character, something that resonates with us despite what the characters actually do. I think that’s one of the marks of a good writer: someone who can get you to like an unlikeable character. And yet, there’s moments when I end up rooting for her. After all, she does do a lot of actions that wouldn’t necessarily be considered “the best.” In fact, she does some pretty terrible things. I’ve been through quite the rollercoaster with her, which is probably a good thing. What’s the rewrite? What if Vlad was born female? As Lada? These books are basically a retelling of the story of Vlad the Impaler. ![]() There’s no magic or anything, but it’s more of a rewrite of history. They’re not fantasy in the strictest sense of the word. When I first picked up these books, I again made the same mistake that I did with Sky in the Deep. The books are And I Darken, Now I Rise, Bright We Burn. ![]() The And I Darken series, by Kiersten White, is a trilogy. ![]() One day, she will prove she is stronger than any man, and not only return to Wallachia but take it for herself. Daughter of a Prince but forced to live in exile since she was a child, Lada considers her mother to be her country, Wallachia. When Lada was born, she was a disappointment to her father for being born a girl. ![]()
